Welcome to the Paleontology Section of the NSS.
The PaleoSection, as we call it, was chartered by the NSS on December 27,
1983, to "improve and facilitate the exchange of data among cavers
interested in paleontology and to bring into contact people of similar
interests." We are a group of cavers, caver scientists, and
scientists who share the common bond of caves, caving, and paleontology.
We encourage all forms of cave related paleontology, including,
vertebrates, invertebrates and plants found in caves. Often overlooked
however are the fossils found within the cave limestone or matrix itself.
We also encourage the study of these forms.
Our newsletter is called the PaleoScene
and is published and distributed to members once or twice a year. Other
publications include this web site and Fossils In Caves, one of the NSS
caver information series. Fossils
In Caves is also available in a modified form on this web site.
Membership
is open to anyone with an interest in cave paleontology. Membership dues
are $5 per year which entitles the member to vote at meetings and receive
the PaleoScene.
Dues are due the 1st of January of each year. Meetings are generally held
once a year at the annual NSS
convention.
Talks and papers are presented by cavers and professionals in
our annual Paleontology Section Session held at each NSS Convention. You
do not need to me a member of the NSS or PaleoSection to present or attend
the session. Often we include cave Archeology talks and papers in the
session. You are invited to present a talk or paper on your research or
favorite paleo project. Contact Ray
Garton for further details.
STOP Before
You Dig or Collect In many states it is illegal to collect
rocks, minerals, fossils, or biota from a cave without a permit. Before
you dig or collect check the appropriate cave
protection laws.
