Welcome to the Home Page for the

Human Sciences Section
of the National Speleological Society.

The section, formerly known as the Social Science Section, was founded in the 1970's to further the study of cavers and their interactions with each other and with caves. In 1991 we changed our name to the Human Sciences Section to better reflect what we do.

Although the section is small, our members are active in a variety of activities in the caving community. We sometimes publish an intermittent newsletter, People Underground, that includes a variety of papers and other information about cavers and caves. . Issues now on the Web as HTML files include: 1993, 1994, and 1995-6.  Issues here in PDF format include 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995-6.  You should be able to click on them to open them if you have an Acrobat reader.

We have changed editors and the 1996-97 and 1997-99 issues have not come out yet.  If you have some material that might be suitable for inclusion in People Underground, contact the Web Master and it will be directed to the appropriate place.

We usually hold a paper session at the annual NSS Convention. To submit a paper for the session that deals with some aspect of people in caves, check out the call for papers for the 2001 NSS Convention.

The Section now has a discussion group:  Caves and People at Egroups.  To check it out, or to join, click here.  You can join by sending an e-mail here:
