Halliday Submits Resolution to NSS BOG supporting preservation of Ewa Karst

October 20, 1998 (posted October 25, 1998)

Dave Jagnow has encouraged me to submit the following resolution for BOG consideration in Pasadena, on behalf of the Hawaii Grotto of which I am Chairman. Detailed supporting data has just appeared in "Cave Conservationist" after a delay of many months (the issue is dated Feb. l, l998). The proposal has the support of local cavers on Oahu, especially including Mike Kliks, Ph.D. I will attend the BOG meeting and bring copies of the "Feb. l" article and be available to discuss it. The Hawaii Grotto hopes for the support of the H.S.S. and of the Conservation Division.

The National Speleological Society supports the efforts of Alan Ziegler, Ph.D to save an 8-acre tract of the Ewa Karst on the island of Oahu, Hawaii containing Coralloid Cave and other caves and karstic pits (locally called "sinkholes") containing extensive deposits of fossil and subfossil bird bones and other biological and geological values. The Society urges the Campbell Estate to reserve and dedicate this tract to scientific study, education, and such public enjoyment as is compatible therewith, without further modification of the natural enviroment of this area.
