Mending Broken Bats: Rehabilitation & Release
Dharma Webber / California Native Bat Conservancy
Speleologists are accustomed to experiencing and respecting bats, as well as sharing
the cave habitat. What happens when bats leave their natural environment and encounter
people less informed than cavers? Currently, bats are the most endangered land mammal
due to fearful people. The process of bat rescue, rehabilitation and release will be
discussed. The future of permanently disabled bats is also addressed. Three species
of native bats, certified non-releasable by California Department of Fish & Game
and USDA, will be displayed and discussed.
Dharma Webber is the director of the California Native
Bat Conservancy. Her organization's mission is public education, bat rescue,
rehabilitation and release, as well as the conservation and protection of wild bat
colonies.
