SESSION ABSTRACT

SEKI Invertebrate Monitoring Workshop
Joel Despain - Cave Specialist / Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park

These two half-day sessions will prepare cavers to participate in or conduct projects under the the new cave animal monitoring program inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park caves. The recent announcement of new species discovered in the park's caves has openend a new management and monitoring strategy as well. This is a chance for cavers to see some fun and interesting caves and cave wildlife. The subject animals may be small, but they are interesting, unique and curiosities of nature.

During the day session on Saturday, participants will review the animals, the caves and the protocols for this work. On Sunday, participants will travel to an area cave for some in-cave practice. The training will include handouts, power point presentations, and, best of all, caving!

Joel Despain is the Cave Specialist for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. A member of the Cave Research Foundation, Joel also sits on the Board of Directors for the Western Cave Conservancy.
