Tytoona Cave Nature Preserve Photos

These photos show the property and cave at the Tytoona Cave Nature Preserve. During the Winter of 1998-99, two vandals spray painted about 70 feet of the cave passage. Following a diligent and persistent investigation, Trooper Wayne Bush of the PA State Police arrested two men. They were subsequently tried and convicted for the damaging of the cave. Many cavers responded on multiple clean-up trips to remove the damage. Our Thanks to Trooper Bush and to the volunteer cavers for their efforts to protect and preserve this resource.

Balcony path Past the log jam The Hanging Umbrella
Caver standing on the "Balcony" path, near the cave register. After passing the log jam, cavers get wet above their knees. One of the formations after the log jam, named the "Hanging Umbrella", is a large flowstone overhang. Originally formed on the floor, erosion has left it hanging.

Cleaning up the rest
After 100 man-hours and $1000 of volunteered equipment, the spray paint is slowly removed.
