INTRODUCTION

The Table of Contents lines above in bold means I have a committee report below,

There are 13 committees, and publications, etc, in the Department of the Executive Vice President (EVP). A fourteenth item has been added here to cover permissions to reprint from NSS publications.

This has been a period of rapid learning about the status, successes and problems of many of the committees along with understanding the accounting system and grasping our financial procedures.

Thanks to Dave Bunnell the NEWS is rolling along, on time and within budget. Classified ads will go to 50 cents a word the first of the year.

On Call is at the printers. Thanks, David McClurg.

The Members Manual and American Caving Accidents are finally heading to press.

A full color GIS special issue of the Journal is in the works for the next issue. This issue will be co-sponsored by ESRI, and guest edited by Bernie Szukalski.

The draft of the new Annual Report is well in the works and has been critically reviewed and edited. This is pretty amazing since the committee chair has not been established yet. I highly recommend selecting Bert Ashbrook.

Maureen Handler is resigning as Members Manual chairman and Jim Pisarowicz is resigning as Journal Production Editor. I am posting both positions in the NEWS as required. Both individuals have cited other activities limiting their available time. I am sorry to see them go.

I will be requesting all non-periodical publication editors to present a benchmarked production timeline in an attempt to eliminate the late publication dates.

I will not be at the Fall Board Meeting, as I stated during my interview. Ray Keeler, a highly experienced EVP, will be my proxy.

Respectfully submitted,

Don Paquette speleo@reliable-net.net

Progress: I have not quite finished with the manuscript for ACA 1999-2000, but am trying my best to get it wrapped up this month. Travel and work have caused many delays for me, but I am making progress towards the end. I expect to get it out to the printer no later than the end of October.

Plans: Finish up the 1999-2000 issue and get it printed and distributed not later than November.

Problems: None other than my own slow pace. I have suspended all other volunteer work and nonessential activities in order to complete the issue.

Progress: Too late for the session deadline for AAAS this year. I will try to be more timely next year and consider a special session, probably with Geology. Have been continuing discussions of ideas for sessions, and informational materials, with colleagues.

Plans: Continuing efforts as above.

Problems: No time to be truly devoted to the cause.

Progress
My symposium submissions to the AAAS was accepted and is scheduled for Monday February 18 from 3-6 P.M. The symposium is titled “Recent Innovation in the Science of Underground Development.” The symposium covers excavated underground space and covers tunnels and micro and macro boring both into rock and soft earth. I am the program organizer and Andy McKown V.P. from Haley and Aldrich is chairing the session.

Plans
I made my reservations to attend the Geology Business meeting on February 14 at 12-3 P.M.  The meeting will be held in the Sheraton Boston Hotel.   The annual meeting will be at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Problems
No problems, all expenses are being handled out of pocket.

American Geological Institute Representative's Report

Progress: The long-awaited AGI publication "Living with Karst: A Fragile Foundation" was published this summer and has received good reviews, according to George Veni.  The publication won an award at the International Congress in Brazil as one of the best speleological publications of the last four years.  Congratulations to the authors for their contributions, to George Veni for handling the NSS's side of assembling and editing the manuscript, and to the NSS officers and board for its financial support and for sticking with us to make the publication happen.

Problems: None

Plans: I will be seeking a proxy to attend the AGI meetings in Boston next month. This meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America.

Dr. Will White
Donald McFarlane, Chairman, Ralph W. Stone Research Grant

Progress: To date, (May 1st 2001 - April 30th 2002 financial year), the RAC has awarded 5 grants, as follows:

EK David 7/9/2001 $750 Hydrologic and geochemical cycling within karst versus non-karst basins within the interior Low Plateau Province of south-central Kentucky.
FLOREA Lea 8/1/2001 $1000 Sedimentaion history of a breached flank margin cave.
HOBBS Joseph 8/1/2001 $1000 Perception and uses of caves in Malaysia
HILL Carol 9/5/2001 $1000 Caves in the Grand Canyon
CHRISTENSON Keith 9/5/2001 $170 Mist nets for cave bat studies in Panama

One additional application has been received and is currently under review.

The RAC webpages are now up and running at the Chairman's home site, but are not yet linked to the main NSS page.

http://jsd.claremont.edu/bio/nss/nssRAC.html

Plans: In the past the RAC has reviewed proposals on a rolling basis, but this makes it difficult to evaluate proposals competitively and creates the danger that the committee will fund a higher proportion of proposals early in the funding cycle and be unable to fund proposals received at a later date.  I have therefore proposed reviewing proposals twice per funding cycle, in June and January of each year.

Problems: None

BOOKS IN PROGRESS

On Call

A Complete Reference for Cave Rescue

John C. Hempel and Annette Fregeau-Conover, Editors

Progress: This book is at the printer now and will most likely be finished by the third week of October and delivered to the NSS Bookstore at the beginning of the fourth week. A final review by the NCRC medical officer and other qualified medics caused the project to be delayed. Also minor problems with image resolution in the pdf files have required some rework.

Plans: On Call was advertised in the NSS News in August 2001 and orders were taken at the NSS convention in July. It will also be part of a multibook ad in the November and December 2001.

Problems: None.

NCRC Rescue Seminar Manual

Jeff Parnell and Members of the NCRC

Progress: The new editor, Jeff Parnell, has prepared some initial chapters of this book, which are being reviewed now. It is planned that this manual will closely follow the NCRC curriculum through all three NCRC levels. Our understanding is that it will contain 31 chapters, a glossary, and four appendixes. Since it directly parallels the instructional materials used in the NCRC seminars, it differs from On Call, which is a general reference book for cave rescue.

Plans: We are awaiting further developments.

Problems: Too early to tell.

Techniques of Cave Conservation and Restoration

Jim Werker and Val Hildreth-Werker, Editors

Progress: Good progress continues to be made by the editors in the final preparation of this book. The book was advertised in the October NSS News and is part of a multi-book Christmas ad (both ads prepared by this committee), which will appear in November and December.

Plans: We are awaiting final materials to begin production, probably in early October. If there are no problems, we expect to have the book printed in late November or early December.

Problems: None.

Other Committee Activities

To help sell NSS books through the Bookstore, this committee has been designing a series of advertisements for the NSS News—at the request of operations vice president Scott Fee and with the able assistance of office manager Stephanie Cothron.

Ads prepared so far include:

On Call
Cave Conservation and Restoration
Cave Minerals of the World
Speleogenesis
Caving Basics
On Rope
SpeleoDigests

A multibook Christmas ad has just been completed that will appear in the November and December issues of the NEWS. It covers five books:

On Station
Cave Conservation and Restoration
On Call
Cave Minerals of the World
On Rope

As indicated in a previous report, we made up a color promotional flier to support the sale of NSS books at IMAX theaters and museum and science bookstores nationwide. To accompany the promotional fliers, we produced a quarter page informational tipon describing NSS library and bookseller discounts.

It goes without saying that these and all future ads were prepared without charge as one of the volunteer tasks of this committee.

Progress: Volume 63, number 2 (August issue) was mailed in August to all members. This issue was another relatively small one and we are well under budget for the year. This is largely due to the postponement of a special issue until spring 2002.

We are currently working on the December (v. 63, n. 3) issue. Abstracts were received from the 2001 National Convention in a prompt manner and are currently being reviewed by the Associate Editors. The December issue will also contain the index for volume 63. We anticipate v. 63, n. 3 being mailed on time in December.

Plans: Bernie Szukalski is working as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue on Geographic Information Systems and Karst/Cave Resources. He and EVP Don Paquette are seeking additional funding to cover the necessary additional color that the issue will require. If the funding comes through, we anticipate making it another pull-out book, a la the Kartchner and Guads special issues. He began receiving manuscripts this week (9/10).

Problems: The Journal staff and advisory board met at the national convention. Our primary topic of discussion was the growing demands on the business, internet, and production side. It is clear that the growing demands have outgrown the capacity of the present editorial team. If the Journal is to continue along the course it has set, the NSS needs to commit more resources to the production side of the Journal. We need a professional-type production editor to handle lay-out, produce a much stronger web presence, and handle the brusque demands from the Treasurer Department.

Along this line, Jim Pisarowicz wishes to resign as Production Editor as soon as possible. The job has grown much too big for him to continue to do under his current employment conditions. I also continue to feel it appropriate to find another Editor, but I would like to see us solve the production problems first. I prefer to avoid dumping the current situation on a new person and to work with the Board to quickly find a solution to the current problems. Addressing the problem, however, needs to come soon.

Progress: The News continues to come out on time and within budget. Apparently I was 5K under budget for the last FY, partly because I held back (based on Ray's request to bail out the Journal) some color use and printing of some fold-out maps. Many articles are coming in and many were promised me at the convention, so material should be plentiful for the near future.

Plans: Convention issue for November, with a color collage. I plan to run 4 pages color as much as possible in the months ahead since my budget allows it, and printing that back side color costs only about $250 more. there will be "100-mile" articles on Fisher Ridge and Wind Cave. Some in-depth articles on digital photography in caves are in the works. Based on feedback from Bert Ashbrook, I plan to raise the classified rates to 50 cents/word beginning with the January issue. Bert suggested 60 cents but I felt that was too big a jump from the current 40.

Problems: None that I'm aware of.

Progress: The MM formatting is nearly complete.  Two more days of work and it should be ready.  The cover art will be scanned on Tuesday to be included in the package going to the printer.

Plans:  The MM should be ready for shipment to the printing house on Friday September 17.

Problems:  The only problems have been personal in nature, and I am forced to resign as the MM editor.  Please accept my apologies for the delays encountered this year.
