Promotions for the Sheck Exley Book

(Promotions for Cave Conservation and Restoration will be similar)

Suggested promotions prepared by the Special Publications Committee for the Sheck Exley book (The Taming of the Slough) include:

• February 2004––Based on its general interest appeal, final layouts were sent to the following publications. To be considered for a review in these journals, this mailing had to sent 60 to 90 days prior to the book’s release.

Booklist, the review journal of the American Library Association, mailed to all libraries.

Library Journal, an independent book review publication mailed to all libraries.

School Library Journal, sent because of the book’s appeal to youthful readers.

Publishers Weekly, directed to the booktrade.

•Foreword Magazine, sent to 15,000 bookesellers and libraries.

•Kirkus reviews, directed to libraries and bookstores.

• New York Times Book Review, the most prestigious of review publications.

• Quality Books, Inc., specializes in small press titles to libraries and wants to see them 60 days before publication. They are handling Kerbo’s Hidden World of Caves.

This mailing contained:

• Copy of the book's layout in a binder, with the book’s color covers in a clear plastic pocket on the front and back (Three of the above received two copies at their request.).

• Description of the book called News about NSS New Books (copy attached).

• Cover letter individually addressed to the new title editor at each publication.

• One-page b/w mini-book catalog of NSS books (copy attached).

• May 2004––Mailing to Amazon.com and bn.com (Barnes and Noble) with:

• Amazon and B/N book submission forms.

• Copy of printed book.

• One-page b/w mini-book catalog of NSS books (copy attached).

• May 2004––Mailing to about 50 show caves on the NCA list who are regular book buyers.

This mailing to include:

• Copy of book's front and back covers.

• Sales letter.

• Descriptive/promotional flyer (similar to Kerbo flyer).

• One-page b/w mini-book catalog of NSS books (copy attached).

• May 2004––mailing to about 75 library wholesalers and distributors with:

• Descriptive/promotional flyer (to be created for this purpose, similar to Kerbo flyer).

• Sales letter.

• One-page b/w mini-book catalog of NSS books (copy attached).

• June 2004–Mailing of printed books to 21 publications, distributors , wholesalers, and others including the Library of Congress. Some of these will be confirming copies to publications that already galleys.

This mailing to include:

• Copy of printed book.

• Cover letter.

• Copies of any reviews received.

• Copies of the Advanced Book Information form sent to R.R. Bowker (Books in Print).

• A five-by-seven photo of the book’s cover.

• Ads in NSS News. One-third page ad:
