ACT SECTION 72 — MEMBERSHIP

 

72-033 Life Membership 4-10-53

No credit will be allowed for past contributions to the Society on Life Membership unless it was specifically designated that the contribution was to be toward a Life Membership at the time it was made.

72-092 Promotion 6-9-60

In order to encourage new members, the following program will be undertaken: (1) Increase visual aid program. (2) Endorse and excite interest in more field trips and expeditions on Grotto, Regional, and National levels. (3) Arouse more interest among commercial cave owners. (4) Don't be too restrictive in discouraging new members from applying. (5) Encourage more libraries to subscribe to NSS publications. (6) Improve schedules of publications. (7) Promote better public relations by accomplishments rather than exhibitionism. (8) Improve photo salon. Provide means for commercial distribution to worthwhile sources. (9) Encourage scientific membership by distribution of occasional papers and similar publications. (10) Acquire a film library of Society owned copies.

72-124 Member Without Journal 6-23-97, 6-17-64

The creation of Member-Without-Journal membership class is not recommended. Membership is more than a magazine subscription. It is a financial share in supporting the Society and its shared goals which includes the encouragement of speleological research and the publication of a Journal and the Journal is a service to the members.

72-230 AAAS 12-4-71

The AAAS has permission to use the NSS membership list for sending information to NSS members, provided that such use be specifically approved by the President of the NSS.

72-239 Recruitment 8-16-74, 8-18-72

The NSS encourages the active recruitment of new members from among the non-NSS-affiliated caving public by its Membership Committee and Internal Organizations, subject to the following constraints: (a) Membership recruitment practices shall at all times be consistent with the Society's policies on cave conservation and caving safety, and (b) Membership recruitment practices which tend primarily to glorify and create interest in caving as a sport shall be avoided.

In order to improve our financial position, improve membership services and publications, and increase support for research and conservation, it is the goal of the NSS to increase its membership as rapidly as possible by all means consistent with the goals of the Society. The effort to increase membership shall be directed primarily to persons that are already involved in some activity relevant to speleology.

72-492 Lapel Pin 3-18-00, 3-16-96, 4-4-92

The National Speleological Society will prepare a special lapel pin to be distributed free to members of the Society who have been members for 25, 35, or 50 years.

72-583 Electronic Membership Application 11-2-96

A facsimile of the NSS Membership Application shall appear within the NSS Homepage. An applicant may apply for NSS membership, using the Facsimile, provided the applicant indicates support for NSS goals and The NSS Cave Conservation Policy and supplies valid credit card data.

72-757 NSS Membership Strategies 3-5-05

Strategies to promote and advertise NSS membership by any committee or the NSS in non-caving publications must be approved by the Board of Governors before implementation. The NSS reaffirms its commitment to follow Act 72-239.

72-766 Membership Goal 11-5-05

Society has a goal of increasing the membership of the Society to 14,000 by the end of 2008. It is our intent to increase the membership among those already caving.
