Caving in Southern New Mexico
About
the Environment
June
in Southern New Mexico can translate into daily temperatures in the 90-105º
range. The elevation for the area
is 3500-4500 feet above sea level. Be
prepared to hike to caves through a high desert/mountainous environment where
spiny plants and poisonous animals reside.
Sunscreen, lightweight clothing that covers arms and legs, hats, sturdy
boots, and plenty of water are necessary for comfort and safety in this
environment.
Dress
for
the Caves
The
caves of the Carlsbad area are recognized as some of the most beautiful and best
decorated in the world. To protect
this fragile resource, gloves, soft knee-pads (no plastic covers), non-frayed
clothes, and non-marking boots are required by the agencies managing/permitting
the use of the caves. If you have any questions regarding appropriate clothing
for the caves, please contact the site coordinator.
Cave Temperatures
Please be aware that caves in New Mexico have warm temperatures (65-80º). Little water is encountered underground, except in one specific cave. If you are accustomed to caving in cooler areas you will need lighter clothing, more water, and appropriate protection from the sun during hikes to the caves.
