Garner Cave
Saturday, April 22nd 2006 - Duane McCully
Trip Leader: Dale Green
On Trip: Dale Green, Rodney Mulder, Tamie Jensen, Duane McCully

This trip was planned because Dale Green's first grotto trip was to this very cave on on April 23, 1956. After some brief confusion regarding the meeting area we were underway. After about an hour of driving we were ready to hike.

The hike is estimated to be approximately forty-five minutes. We cut off the trail earlier than is ideal but Dale and I still essentially walked straight to the cave. On the way to the cave we had to walk under a yellow jacket nest which I paid particular attention to since I am prone to being stung by everything.

Garner Cave is relatively simple cave and is fairly well known by the locals. It is about fifteen feet up a cliff and there are ladders attached with makeshift rigging to facilitate entry. There were four high school/college age kids just leaving the cave about the time we arrived. They did not have helmets but did appear to have at least one headlamp each. They reported doing the entire cave.

Dale remarked that the cave was wetter than he remembered ever seeing it. This had the effect of making everything very slippery. Where I had expected an extremely simple novice cave, a substantial amount of attention and energy was spent on not falling into the slot we were perpetually traversing. The upper level eventually terminates in a tight crawl. It looked like I could have made it further down but it would have been very difficult. We did not tour the lower level.

While hiking out we made another party that had been looking for the cave and had just given up. This is where I will insert my plug for hiking with your helmet inside your pack. It generates less questions for curious eyes.
