We all supposed to meet at my house at 6:00 PM, but due to traffic delays in Provo Canyon with my job, I was 2 1/2 hours late. So we finally got on the road about 9:00 pm.
Our first stop was the Fillmore Lava Tubes. We drove all the way to Tabernacle Hill Lava Tube and setup camp. The next morning we got up and went exploring through the Tabernacle Hill system. There is allot there. And it was fun. My sister is studying Vulcanology at SUU so it was fun to get her perspective on it. Once we were done we packed up to drive to GBNP. Tawnya had to be back home so she departed out trip.
When we arrived at Lehmans Cave we all got tickets for the last trip of the year. The tour guide knew that we were all cavers and offered us a special trip. We got to see out-of-the-way and off-the-trail areas like the entrance and the exit. What amazing natural gunite formations. We got back out of the cave after our "Special" trip and decided to head to Gandy.
When we got to Gandy the weather was starting to get a bit rough. And it was cold. We setup camp and debated wether or not we were going to enter Beware now or wait till tomorrow. Well, we thought a mad game of Uno would be good and then we could decide. So we all huddled into Ralph's tent and played some games.
About 9:00 pm Peter Hartley showed up. He wanted to see the cave so Peter and Cami went and got their swimsuits to go in. I thought they were crazy. It was windy and cold. But they are tough people. So they entered the cave. When they got out, I thought I saw Cami but I wasn't sure. All I saw was a screaming blue streak blow past us and into Cami's tent. She was freezing.
Once everyone got warm, we decided to celebrate the New Year with some virign bubbly. And then we went to bed.
The next morning we got up and it was off to Goshute Cave. It's a long drive from Gandy Utah to Goshute Cave in Nevada. When we finally got to the Goshute area, it was starting to get dark. We had some idea where it might be, but were not sure. After Tami and Cami did some exploring in the canyons, we thought we had found the cave. When we all got there the consensus was this was not the right canyon. Well, it was getting dark and we decided to forgo the Goshute Cave and head back down the mountain.
When we got back to the cars we decided that a major storm was rolling in and it might be smarter to go back home then try and find Crystal Cave and get stuck in the mountains. So, we went back to Wendover and then back home.
It was a fun trip. One side note. I would only recommend doing this trip during the summer. With the snow, and the lack of evening light, we were limited on what we could do. The summer months provide much more time and warmth.
And that was our trip... |
