From the introduction:
Most of the world's highest mountains have been conquered, but as for the deepest caves, who knows? In the last decade more than three quarters of the world's hundred or so known caves over 500m deep have been bottomed. In the last three years the world depth record has been broken three times and is now pushing towards 1500m. Vertical caving is in its golden age - and this is largely so because of the common acceptance of single rope techniques (SRT). Originally devised for mountaineering, SRT has been taken into caving and is now recognised as the best general method for shaft exploration. It is used by the speleologist and sport caver alike.
