The San Francisco Bay Chapter (SFBC) is an internal organization of the National Speleological Society known as a grotto. Grottos are local groups of cavers who like to get together monthly and chat about caves and caving, watch videos and presentations about caving, and of course go on trips to caves. Besides organizing trips, the SFBC is also very involved in local cave conservation, speleology (the study of caves), geology, cave surveying, and cave photography. We are also involved in cave rescue training (including self-rescue). If you are interested in caves, feel free to drop by one of our meetings and introduce yourself! New members are always welcome!

The SFBC is a corporation organized and operated exclusively for scientific and educational purposes, as outlined in its articles of incorporation, within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As such, it does not have a constitution, but rather conducts its business following the guidelines presented in the SFBC bylaws.

Chapter meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at United States Geological Survey's (USGS) main center in Menlo Park at 7:30 PM SHARP. (Note that some months have five (5) Tuesdays, so if you persist in showing up on the last Tuesday of the month, you'll eventually be surprised and disappointed a couple of times per year.) There is not a monthly meeting in December, due to the grotto Holiday Party.

The U.S. Geological Survey is located at:

345 Middlefield Road
Menlo Park, California.

The easiest approach is from US 101 via Willow Road, also the middle exit of the three that serve the Dumbarton Bridge. From the north or the south, exit Willow Road and proceed west on Willow, passing Bay Road (stoplight), then the Veterans Administration Hospital (stoplight), assorted small businesses, a Willow Oaks School and Park, Coleman Avenue (stoplight) then 1/4 mile of residences. At Middlefield Road (Chevron station on your right) turn right and proceed north on Middlefield, changing into the LEFT LANE as soon as practicable. Pass Menlo Park's Fire Station #1 on the right at Linfield Avenue (no light) and Saint Patrick's Seminary thereunto adjacent. Just past the deer sculpture on your left, turn LEFT into the USGS via a street called Survey Lane and proceed into the USGS grounds, passing the flagpole and parking in the large lot that is obvious after you pass the flagpole circle. USGS Building 3 contains the map sales desk and the main conference facility, which is where we meet in room 3237. Walk from the parking lot all the way to the eastern end of Building 3, ascend the exterior stairway and enter Building 3 that way. If handicapped access is required, we will open the first floor door and show you to the elevator. It can be done, but isn't immediately obvious.

If you approach the USGS from the west side of Menlo Park (I-280, for example), pick your way to El Camino Real via Sand Hill Road and Stanford Shopping Center, or use Santa Cruz Avenue from Sand Hill Road, thence to Ravenswood Avenue, cross the CALTRAIN tracks and proceed east to Middlefield Road. Ravenswood T-junctions at Menlo Atherton High School about 2/3 mile east of El Camino Real. Turn right and proceed through the next stoplight to the USGS via Survey Lane and park and walk as directed above.

The restaurant currently is Jeffrey's Hamburgers. We usually start gathering there around 6:30PM, although some may arrive earlier.

Jeffrey's is located at:
888 El Camino Real
Menlo Park, CA 94025

After the members' meeting, a bunch of cavers have started heading on over to Oasis for some beer and peanuts. Feel free to join us!

Oasis is close to USGS and offers a reasonable selection of refreshments. At the meeting folks can choose to which bistro they care to repair to following the meeting.

And Oasis is located at:

241 El Camino Real
Menlo Park, CA 94025

Executive Committee meetings are held at 6:00 PM on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Fresh Taste Mandarin Kitchen in Palo Alto. Anyone is invited to share a meal and swap stories with us, but only elected officers can vote on grotto issues.
