Mapping
why do we make cave maps and how?
Why we do it – to determine the size and characteristics of a cave. We use cave maps to graphically illustrate the characteristics of caves. The maps serve as a base for further study of the cave. We make sure all the required data is gathered accurately and legibly, so the survey doesn’t have to be done again, as sometimes we find we are surveying someplace so bad, we never want to see it again!
How we do it – measure the distance, bearing and elevational differences between points in a cave. We try to record all resources as we go, making note of their position in relation to key features in the cave. A proportional representation is made, with walls and other features arranged in relation to the traverse line.Who gets them – Usually, only cavers get the maps. If we do one for the USFS and they care about their caves, they get a copy, or if a private land owner wants one, they get one. They aren’t put out to just anyone who may want one. They are published in the RAG or regional or nation publication, if they aren’t too big, otherwise only mentioned in articles.
