The Pine Mountain Grotto was founded in 1992 as a southeastern Kentucky chapter of the National Speleological Society , the world's largest organization dedicated to the study, exploration, and preservation of caves. The Pine Mountain Grotto supports and participates in these activities, and in the fellowship that makes the caving community unique. Accordingly, we invite all who share an interest in caves and a willingness to abide by basic standards of safety and conservation to join us.
Since the Pine Mountain Grotto formation, members have worked on mapping, conservation, and rescue projects involving the Cave Research Foundation, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Kentucky State Parks, Indiana State Parks, regional park authorities in Virginia, the U.S. National Park Service, the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Pulaski County (Kentucky) Rescue Squad, the Virginia Speleological Survey, the West Virginia Speleological Survey, and the Pine Mountain Survey, among other agencies and groups. The PMG enjoys a particularly close relationship with the Union College Appalachian Wilderness Club. In 1995, Pine Mountain Grotto joined the Virginia Region, and has hosted two VAR events.
The grotto's newsletter, The Pine Mountain Fault, along with its e-mail adjunct, the e-fault, serves as an open forum for members' ideas, concerns, and creativity, and as a historical record of PMG activities. Members are encouraged to contribute trip reports, articles, artwork, and photos to the Fault. The grotto library maintains a collection of books, periodicals, videos, photographs, and other archival materials related to caves, caving, the NSS, and Pine Mountain Grotto activities.
