Regular Meeting

October 31, 2006

The October meeting of the James River Grotto was held on Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at the Warren House ground floor activity room at Lynchburg College.

 Board Meeting:

The board meeting began at 6:30 PM. Board members present were Mike Frazier, Matt Lair, Bess Tennant and Chuck Waller.

There was no business to discuss.

General Meeting:

The general meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM. Members present were Jim Tennant, Paul and Melanie Stern, Ron Inge, Harry and Larry Sowers. LC New Horizons staff Ryan Mayr, Evan Miller, Tom Landesman and Ken Wood were also attendance

Welcome Visitors: There were no visitors.

Trip Reports: There was a New Horizons trip to Link's and Tawney's Cave lead by Evan Miller. Approximately 15 staff and students were on this trip.

The grotto's October trip to Starne's Cave was canceled due to heavy rains.

Previous Meeting Minutes Update: There were no changes to the previous meeting minutes.

Finance Report: The grotto's current treasury balance is $2,418.55.

In October, James River Grotto donated $250.00 to 8 Rivers Safe Development Task Force to aid in the conservation efforts to help Sharpe's Cave.

Committee Reports:

Conservation: No report

Safety & Techniques: Jim Tennant, JRG Safety and Techniques Chairperson, conducted a clinic on tying the Butterfly Knot. Members at the meeting tried several different techniques for tying this knot.

Education: No report

Membership: No report

Web Site: New members, Paul and Melanie Stern, will be updating our website in the near future.

Gear Master: No report

Trip Coordinator / Events:

On Saturday, November 18, there will be a grotto trip to Scott Hollow Cave. On Sunday, December 3, a cave trip to Starne's Cave is planned.

The grotto's Christmas party will be on Saturday, December 16 at Paul and Melanie Stern's home.

Trip and Events Coordinator, Matt Lair, will be emailing everyone with specific details regarding all the above activities.

General Discussion:

James River Grotto has purchased the DVD "The Discovery of Grand Caverns." This DVD will be in our library for members to borrow.

Meeting Adjournment:

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM.

Program:

Following adjournment of the meeting, members enjoyed watching "The Discovery of Grand Caverns".
