The January meeting of the James River Grotto was held on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Lynchburg College.

 Board Meeting:

At the December 2004 Christmas social new grotto board members were elected.  The 2005 JRG Board Members are Matt Lair, Bess Tennant, Howard Kirkland, Whes Spangler, Mike & Hannah Frazier and Chuck Waller.

The board meeting began at 6:30 PM.  Board members present were Matt Lair, Bess Tennant, Mike & Hannah Frazier, Howard Kirklnd and Chuck Waller.

The Board Members present elected the grotto officers for 2005.  Mike Frazier was elected President, Bess Tennant - Vice President and Chuck Waller - Secretary / Treasurer.

General Meeting:

The general meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM.  Members present were Jim Tennant,Hutch & Jamie Hutchinson, Ron Inge and George Wortley.

At the general meeting the grotto 2005 Committee Chairpersons were elected.  Matt Lair was elected grotto Trip Coordinator, Howard Kirkland - Membership Chairperson,  Kent Ramsey - Online News Editor , Hutch Hutchinson - Education Chairperson , Whes Spangler - Conservation Chairperson and new member Neil Gunter - Gearmaster.  Election of the Safety & Techniques Chairperson was tabled until the next meeting.

Welcome Visitors:  Visitor Biff Bowen joined the grotto and will be taking his sons on upcoming trips.  Sweet Briar students Robin Parkinson, Anel Avila and Karlena Sakas attended the meeting.  Anel attended the 2004 Fall VAR in West Virginia.  Students Neil Gunter and Dave Hamilton are now grotto educational members through Lynchburg College.

Finance Report: The James River Grotto's treasury starts 2005 with a balance of $827.50.

Trip Coordinator / Events:

Hutch Hutchinson will be leading two caving trips this weekend.  On Friday evening Jan.28, 2005 there is a trip to Locher Track Cave near Glasgow, VA.  On Sunday, Jan.30, 2005 a cave  trip is planned for Island Ford Cave in Covington, VA.  Contact Hutch for details about these trips.       

Matt Lair will be the 2005 grotto Trip Coordinator.

Mark your calendars for April 29-May 1 for the Spring VAR to be held in Lewisburg, WV.

Also plans are in the works for another TAG trip in October 2005.

General Discussion:

The program for the February meeting will be the video "Amazing Caves".  At the upcoming March meeting, Jamie Hutchinson will be presenting a program on "Bats".  Howard Kirkland plans on presenting a slide show on "Caving In The USA" in April.
