The Harrison Crawford Grotto (HCG) is a caving club located in southern Indiana and is one of nearly 200 grottos nationwide. These grottos, or caving clubs, are internal organizations of the National Speleological Society (NSS). On most weekends members can be found exploring some of the several hundred known caves in Harrison and Crawford counties. Under the limestone hills and valleys of the area lie many more undiscovered caves for members to find. The Harrison Crawford Grotto holds a recreational cave trip on the first Sunday of each month. Members usually go out to dinner after the trip. The grotto has a more formal meeting each quarter at 6:30pm at the home of Dave Black. At the meeting we discuss caves and caving and make plans for future cave trips and events. A program often follows the short meeting. The program might be a showing of recent trip pictures, a speaker, a movie, or a technical workshop. HCG members participate in recreational caving, but are also involved in cave clean up projects, cave surveying, cave photography, cave rescues, and searching for new caves. Each of these activities adds a new dimension to the sport of caving. Becoming involved in the grotto opens up a whole world of caving related activities for the adventurous person. One of the goals of the HCG is to help people learn proper and ethical caving techniques so that caves can be explored safely and without damage. Going on a cave trip with the grotto is a way to meet other people interested in caves, and members can lend gear and experience to the new caver. Please come the Harrison Crawford Grotto's monthly trip or meeting and discover the excitement of caving for yourself!
