Cave Rescue
Cave rescue could be defined as a combination of "confined space" and "high
angle" rescues carried out in total darkness! Due to the remoteness of the
patient, "wilderness" EMS protocols often prevail.
Mission Statement
The purpose of
EAST TENNESSEE CAVE RESCUE (ETCR)
is to provide search and rescue assistance to federal, state and county
agencies when a cave related mishap has occurred or is suspected.
Agency Associations -
Sponsors -
ETG is the local chapter of the
NATIONAL SPELEOLOGICAL SOCIETY (NSS)
, which sponsors the NCRC.
-
ETCR
is a nonprofit, volunteer organization not affiliated with any rescue squads
or emergency medical service groups.
Area of Operation
ETCR
's primary area of operation as assigned by the state NCRC coordinator, is a 70
mile radius from the Knoxville / Oak Ridge area, encompassing 30 counties and
over 15,000 square miles of East and Middle Tennessee.
When
ETCR
responds to a call, adjacent cave rescue groups can be placed on standby so
they can respond quickly if additional resources are needed.
ETCR
is ready to assist any group in a cave search and rescue operation. Like most
SAR / EMS groups,
ETCR
would like to be called as early in the event as possible, even if it turns
out that they are not needed.
Training
NCRC
-
ETCR
personnel receive annual training from the NCRC in the form of an 8 day course
held at various locations around the country.

ETCR
-
ETCR
conducts training for its members in the form of monthly instruction and both
outdoor and underground workshops.
In addition to the unique equipment and specialized training for cave rescue,
it is significant that
ETCR
personnel are "cavers". That is to say they spend most of their recreational
time caving in all types of caves throughout the southeast, both horizontal and
vertical. They are very "comfortable" working underground in what might be
considered adverse or hazardous conditions.
