Carcass Crypt Cleanup Project Update, July 2003
I am pleased to report, the second scheduled cleanup preparation trip
to Carcass Crypt Pit on Saturday, July 26th was an overwhelming success.
In attendance were nine cavers representing two grottos (EIG & CIG) with
one independent.
On the surface, the old fence was removed and a new fence line was
cleared of all brush, small trees, and other debris. Only a very small
amount of trash, consisting of bits of broken glass & small items of
refuse, remain on the slope of the sink. One tree of about a 10 inch
diameter will need to be removed on the next trip to facilitate
installation of the haul out system.
Inside the pit, all large items of refuse as well as all visible
trash was excavated. The entrance to a side passage that will serve as
a safety zone during the haul out; was an 8 foot vertical climb down
over bike frames and various rusty metal stuff. It is now a much safer,
debris free slope to the passage floor.
On the final preparation trip, small items scattered across the floor
need to be gathered and previously excavated trash will need to be
arranged to expedite removal. Any further excavation of trash (now
hidden under mud and natural debris) will be a bonus. It has become
painfully obvious that a complete restoration is inconceivable within
the scope of this project. I believe however, in the end, it will at
least appear completely natural.
If you wish to get involved but can't attend the final completion
weekend of September 19-21, this will be your last chance. Most of the
EIG members, involved in the rigging, haulout and project safety are
expected to attend this trip so anyone with questions, concerns or just
wishing to learn more about the project, prior to its completion date
is also urged to attend at this time.
The final preparation trip on August 23rd (August 30 will be a
rainout date) will depart from the McDonalds resturant at the
intersection of SR 37 and SR 60, on the southwest side of Mitchell, Ind
at 10am local time. If anyone needs to arrive later please contact me at
bleavell@indy.net or 765-552-7619 (eve's)
for directions to the site.
