The Columbia Grotto is a group of people
who share a passion for the diverse underground worlds found in caves. Members' interests
include mapping, scientific study, exploration, digging for caves, working as guides
in commercial caves, and artistic appreciation of caves. Grotto activities center
around Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, the Motherlode area of California,
......but can, and often range to Sequoia National Park, and far beyond California. The Columbia Grotto chapter of the NSS was founded in 1978 by Ralph Squire. Since then the grotto has been led by Lisa Woodward, Gene Rimmer, Jeff Fitzwater, Max Potter, Dave Tebaldi, and Mike White. Our local caves receive many visitors, making conservation and clean-up high priorities. The underground environment is fragile, easily damaged by human intrusion. Caves may also be potentially dangerous, especially for beginners. The National Speleological Society is dedicated to the exploration, study, enjoyment, and preservation of caves. As a chapter of the NSS, we encourage interested cavers to join an NSS grotto, or other conservation-minded caving organization, as a way to explore caves more safely. The Columbia Grotto invites you to share our web site. Please read about safety and conservation to enter the dark, gritty world of Motherlode caving. Webmaster's notes: I've received many e-mails praising me for how great the site is...... Please realize that Elizabeth Bunnell "built" it. I only maintain it, and add new stuff..... I can only hope to follow in her "large" footsteps.... Bruce Brand, AKA "TROLL 5" 03/02 |
