Rich Steffensen

Rich Steffensen calls himself "Cave Junky," referring, of course, to his habit of frequent caving. Like many such behaviors, Rich's caving began in childhood, on an overnight camping trip in 1980. We don't know exactly what happened, but he has been exploring caves ever since. Like a true California caver, Rich is willing to squeeze, wriggle, wallow, and thrash in search of a thrill. He appreciates the self-reliance imposed by the underground environment, and maybe he likes the adrenaline rush.

Besides enjoying the challenge and adventure of exploring new caves, Rich participates in many conservation projects in and around caves. He has some projects of his own and is always seeking people interested in helping to clean up a cave. As you may notice from the coveralls, Rich is a medic on an emergency services team.
