Caves and caving fascinate me in several different ways. To me, a cave is a very specific place, often as different from other caves as it is from the surface above it. A cave that is cut off from the rest of the planet may have an ecology found nowhere else. These unique places are irreplaceable and need our protection. When I enter a place that is a world unto itself, part of me gets to be an infant again, starting my exploration with eyes, ears, nose, and fingers. (Best not to taste too many things). Caving is a continual challenge. I started caving because I like to explore my own limits, but I'm not willing to jump from high places. It gives me the opportunity to face my fears and use my strengths. |
