Prior to 1980, only a few caves were known to exist within Bucks County, the most noteworthy of which is Durham Cave. This cave is undoubtedly the first significant cave discovered in Pennsylvania by European settlers and may very well be the first cave discovered in North America by the colonists. Although three quarters of Durham Cave was quarried away in the 1850s, the remaining chamber forms a natural amphitheater that is more than 160 feet long, 55 feet wide and 30, feet high.
Much of what we know of Durham Cave’s early history, stems from a detailed account published in a Hudson, New York Newspaper in 1805.
