NSS Planning Committee Membership
The NSS Planning Committee is currently composed of ten members including the chair. The membership is balanced between NSS directors and regular members, with representatives from various parts of the country.
NSS members interested in serving on the Planning Committee should contact the committee chair to discuss current or anticipated vacancies. Prospective committee members should be willing to devote 3-5 hours per week to committee activity, primarily conducted over an internet-based discussion group, and have some sort of experience with group collaboration and planning. Occasionally the chair may assign individual research assignments or other individual work to committee members.

The job of the planning committee chair is defined by action of the NSS president under whom the chair and
committee members serve. The chair is appointed by the president with the approval
of the Board of Governors. The job description of the committee chair is contained

The composition of the committee membership is determined by the committee chair.
Once appointed, the job of the individual committee members is basically to assist
the chair in accomplishing the work of the committee. Different chairs may choose
to utilize the knowledge and talents of the committee members in different ways,
but the current chair is committed to allowing as much collaboration and interaction
among members as time allows, under the belief that the more qualified minds working
on a problem the better. The present committee is run as much as possible as a
team of peers, but a few rules apply:
"Class Rules" for Planning Committee
In order to assure that new committee members are able to step in quickly when needed,
up to date on committee proceduresand business at hand, the chair may appoint alternative
members as needed. These members are free to offer input as a member of the committee but
do not vote when committee decisions require a formal poll. When a vacancy in the committee
membership occurs alternate members may be offered that position before looking outside the committee.
