Cave Rescue, March 7, 1969

Cass Cave, WV

REPORT

On 7 March a group of four attempted to descend into the Big Room in Cass Cave. Larry Stuart (30?) rappelled first but their new rope twisted below him into a knot he could not clear. Rescuers were called.

After Stuart had hung 3 to 4 hours a few feet off the bottom, he was pulled up at about 8:00 PM.

Analysis

"unsual problem. Most experienced person (Stuart) was not in a position to help himself. Luckily, water level was low for this time of year; if the water had been normal, Stuart would have been in ice-cold water all the time. He was not wearing an exposure suit."
